Central and Eastern European currencies rebounded strongly last week. Economists at ING expect them to remain strong this week.
Global developments boost the region
The regional currencies are still set to benefit from EUR/USD’s gains over the weekend today.
Sentiment remains open to risk, with gas prices falling again to their lowest levels since early June, which is especially beneficial for the Hungarian Forint. The region’s calendar has little to offer, so the main focus will be on global stories.
Overall, we expect currencies across the region to rise further, albeit at a slower pace. The HUF remains our favorite currency in the CEE region. We expect further strength in the forint, with EUR/HUF falling below 373. Further gains in PLN and CZK are also expected, with EUR/PLN and EUR/CZK falling below 4.40 and 23.70 respectively.
