The GBP/USD currency pair is under renewed pressure after slipping below key technical thresholds, with traders highlighting broader dollar strength and shifting monetary expectations as principal catalysts for recent moves.
Over the past 48 hours, GBP/USD has failed to sustain levels above 1.3500, instead drifting toward the 1.3330 area where downside momentum appears to be accelerating. Market technicians pointed to weakening RSI readings and a series of lower highs, signaling an erosion in bullish conviction.
The rebound in U.S. dollar demand is partly attributable to safe-haven positioning amid persistent geopolitical uncertainties and stronger U.S. Treasury yields, which continue to attract capital flows into dollar-denominated assets.
Despite mixed U.K. data releases, sterling sentiment has faltered against a backdrop of cautious Bank of England guidance that suggests potential easing later in the year. This has contrasted with a more resilient U.S. macro backdrop, leaving GBP/USD vulnerable to further retracement.
FX strategists noted that a breach of the 1.3300 psychological level could open the door for deeper corrections toward 1.3200. Conversely, a rebound above short-term resistance around 1.3450 may be needed to arrest the current slide.
Traders are preparing for key U.S. inflation figures slated for release later in the week. A stronger-than-expected print could embolden the dollar further, intensifying pressure on GBP/USD; weaker data, however, might provide some relief.
Market participants also highlighted that cross-asset flows, including shifts into commodities or bond markets, could indirectly shape FX positioning and influence GBP/USD trends in the sessions ahead.
