USDJPY Approaches Key Resistance as Fed Holds Rates and BOJ Plans First Hike Since Years

by Anna

The forex market is entering a critical phase as the US dollar against the Japanese yen (USDJPY) approaches a significant resistance level near 160 to 162. This development comes amid diverging monetary policies between the Federal Reserve (Fed) and the Bank of Japan (BOJ), which are shaping expectations for currency traders worldwide. While the Fed is expected to maintain its current interest rates, the BOJ appears poised to raise rates for the first time in years due to rising inflation pressures in Japan.

The Fed’s decision to keep interest rates steady reflects ongoing concerns about persistent inflation, strong employment data, and rising Treasury yields. Inflation in the US remains elevated, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increasing by 4.2% over the past year, largely driven by energy costs. This has contributed to a cautious but firm stance from the Fed, led by Chair Kevin Warsh, who is seen as hawkish. Market participants anticipate that the Fed will hold rates at 3.50% to 3.75% for now, awaiting further data on inflation and labor markets before considering any changes.

In contrast, Japan faces growing inflation challenges due to increased energy prices, higher import costs, and a weakening yen. The producer price index rose sharply by 6.3% in May, marking the fastest increase since March 2023. This trend has been worsened by geopolitical tensions affecting energy supply routes. Consequently, the BOJ is expected to raise its short-term policy rate from 0.75% to 1%, marking its first hike since December and pushing rates to their highest levels in decades. This move aims to combat inflation while trying not to impede economic growth in Japan.

The narrowing gap between US and Japanese interest rates is central to USDJPY’s outlook. Historically, a wide rate difference has supported a stronger dollar against the yen, pushing USDJPY toward the 160 level. However, with the BOJ tightening policy and the Fed holding steady, this spread may begin to shrink. A smaller gap could reduce pressure on the yen and lead to more cautious trading around current levels. The market is also attentive to potential BOJ intervention if USDJPY breaches critical resistance near 160.

From a technical perspective, USDJPY remains in a bullish channel with strong support around 140. Each time it approaches this lower level, significant rebounds have followed, driving prices higher. The pair has tested the upper resistance zone of 160-162 multiple times recently, indicating a compression that may soon resolve with a breakout. A confirmed move above 162 could open the path for USDJPY to climb toward long-term targets near 170 to 175.

Elsewhere in forex trading, other major pairs and commodities show mixed trends. The Euro has rallied slightly against the US dollar but remains within a broad trading range around 1.16 due to uncertainty linked to US bond yields. Gold recently tested an important support near $4,000 amid volatility driven by shifting interest rates and geopolitical risks. Silver’s price action suggests potential gains if it can break above $70 after forming bullish patterns near $60.

Stock indices such as Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 have experienced choppy trading with underlying bullish trends intact but tempered by global headline risks including Middle East tensions and bond market concerns. The German DAX fluctuated between key support at €24,000 and resistance near €25,000 without clear breakout momentum.

Overall, forex traders are advised to watch key technical levels closely while factoring in central bank policies and geopolitical developments that could impact volatility and market direction over the coming weeks.
