Euro Continues to Fall in Exchange Rate Against the Lek

The euro is currently undergoing a notable downward trend against the lek, despite the absence of the summer season. In foreign exchange markets, the European currency is being traded at 100.7 lek.

Persistent depreciation of the euro against the lek has been observed, with the month of April demonstrating a performance akin to peak periods such as July or December, traditionally characterized by significant foreign inflows.

Presently, the euro stands at 100.7 ALL. Market analysts attribute this trend largely to the surge in tourism, with visitor numbers up by 40% compared to last year, significantly influencing exchange rates.

If tourism indeed remains a dominant factor, indications suggest that the euro’s decline may persist, particularly during the summer months when Albania anticipates a surge in tourist activity.

Notably, the lek has exhibited strength against various other currencies in recent years, including the dollar, franc, and pound, with exchange rates against these currencies currently at historically low levels as of the end of April.

While the Bank of Albania and the Government have refrained from guaranteeing protection against substantial exchange rate fluctuations, they have implemented measures to support specific sectors adversely affected by such shifts.
