USD/JPY traded near 156.60 on Wednesday as year-end portfolio flows and fresh Federal Reserve minutes amplified intraday volatility, leaving traders cautious ahead of thinner holiday liquidity. Market participants said the pair’s move was driven by a modest dollar rebound against a muted yen, rather than any sudden shift in fundamentals.
The immediate backdrop was the release of Fed minutes that reinforced expectations of policy easing in 2026 while showing dissent among some officials — a dynamic that kept the dollar susceptible to headline-driven reversals. That mixed message helped lift the dollar index and supported USD/JPY into the mid-156 area as U.S. rates remained relatively firm versus Japan.
Japan’s bond market added pressure on the yen after benchmark 10-year JGB yields extended a steep annual surge, trading around 2.07% on the day — the highest levels not seen since the late 1990s — reflecting reduced BOJ bond buying and a year of rapid yield repricing. Traders said the rise in JGB yields weakened demand for safe-haven yen positions and made dollar/yen a natural beneficiary.
The Bank of Japan’s gradual normalization remained central to price action. While the BOJ has raised policy rates this month to multi-decade highs, market participants described its pace as measured; that limited any immediate yen appreciation and left the exchange rate sensitive to U.S. data and Fed commentary. FX strategists cautioned that the policy path for both central banks will dictate direction into January.
Year-end positioning also played a role. With many institutional desks reducing exposure and hedging balance sheets, block trades and stop orders clustered around round-number levels amplified moves during otherwise thin sessions, traders said. That amplified intraday swings even as the broader trend through December remained dollar-weak on an annual basis.
Market participants flagged technical congestion between 155.50 and 158.00 as a region of contention. Short-term momentum indicators suggested overbought conditions, raising the prospect of corrective pullbacks, but liquidity into the turn of the calendar left any decisive break uncertain. Analysts suggested watching incoming U.S. data and any BOJ comments for the next directional impulse.
Institutional traders said intervention risk remained part of the macro checklist but was not the dominant driver on Wednesday. Instead, they pointed to the interplay of holiday flows, JGB yield moves and Fed minutes as the proximate causes of USD/JPY’s push toward 156.6. Market participants noted that any sharper move nearer ¥160 would quickly refocus attention on official communication from Tokyo.
