EUR/USD Dips to $1.1682 as Dollar Rally Grips Markets, Traders Eye Ism and Friday Payrolls

by Anna

EUR/USD fell sharply on Monday as a broad U.S. dollar rally pushed the pair to intraday lows near $1.1682, with traders citing a crowded macro calendar and elevated demand for dollar liquidity ahead of this week’s ISM manufacturing release and Friday’s nonfarm payrolls. The move marked the euro’s retreat from early-January gains and reflected renewed market focus on U.S. economic data that could reshape expectations for the Federal Reserve’s rate path.

Market participants said positioning carried over from the holiday-thinned period amplified reactions to news and data expectations. Dealers pointed to stopping orders clustered below 1.17 that accelerated selling once the dollar gathered momentum, while European cash flows remained subdued after year-end rebalancing. Technical desks noted that the move brought EUR/USD back into the short-term trading range that capped gains in December.

Traders also referenced central-bank policy divergence as a supporting theme for dollar strength. The European Central Bank’s recent decision to keep policy rates steady and to maintain a meeting-by-meeting, data-dependent tone has reduced the euro’s near-term carry advantage, even as markets price a slower path of Fed cuts than previously expected. That dynamic has increased sensitivity to U.S. macro prints and political headlines that could tilt Fed expectations.

Short-term trading floors reported active flows from macro hedge funds and corporate treasuries adjusting USD exposures ahead of the payrolls release. “Everyone’s running inventory light and reducing directional risk into Friday,” said one currency trader at a global bank. The trader added that any upside surprise in U.S. payrolls or wages would likely prolong dollar strength and pressure EUR/USD toward the 1.16 area.

Market strategists cautioned that the current rout is data-sensitive rather than structural. Several macro houses still see room for EUR/USD strength through H1 2026 should U.S. growth disappoint and the Fed pivot faster than pricing implies, but that view hinges on a string of softer U.S. prints. For now, the near-term consensus favors dollar resilience until a clear signal emerges that Fed easing is imminent.

Liquidity and event risk will dominate the trading calendar for the rest of the week. In addition to the ISM manufacturing and the payrolls report, options expiries and month-start reflows are expected to provide local support for volatility in the EUR/USD complex. Traders advised tight risk controls and suggested monitoring the 1.1650–1.1750 corridor for intraday setups.

For corporate FX managers and systematic funds, the episode underscores the narrow window for directional bets ahead of major prints. While longer-term debates over relative monetary policy continue, the immediate driver for EUR/USD is the U.S. data sequence this week and how it reshapes market expectations for Fed cuts in 2026.
