AUD/USD Advances Past 0.6700 Ahead of Key US Data and RBA Rate Expectations

by Anna

The AUD/USD pair rose above the 0.6700 level during early Asian trading on Tuesday, extending gains to around 0.6715 as the US Dollar weakened. The move comes as markets position ahead of a series of high-impact US economic releases and amid growing expectations of tighter monetary policy in Australia.

Investor attention is firmly on upcoming US data, with the Nonfarm Payrolls report at the center of market focus. Consensus estimates point to a 55,000 increase in December employment. A stronger-than-expected outcome could lend support to the US Dollar and cap further upside in the AUD/USD pair.

In Australia, inflation data is also set to play a critical role. The November Consumer Price Index is scheduled for release on Wednesday and is expected to influence near-term direction for the Australian Dollar.

Geopolitical developments in Venezuela, including a US military operation that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, have had little impact on currency markets.

Despite the significance of the event and subsequent legal proceedings involving US charges, market participants have largely sidelined geopolitical risks in favor of macroeconomic indicators.

Support for the Australian Dollar continues to stem from rising expectations that the Reserve Bank of Australia may raise interest rates. Following the RBA’s December policy meeting, Governor Michelle Bullock reiterated concerns over persistent inflation. Analysts now see an increased likelihood of a rate hike at the February 3 meeting, particularly if fourth-quarter core inflation data exceeds forecasts.
