The forex market experienced a notable upswing in trading volumes throughout May 2026, as major platforms reported significant increases in daily turnover. Data from Cboe FX reveals that spot foreign exchange transactions climbed sharply, indicating a surge in market participation and improved liquidity conditions.
According to Cboe FX’s latest figures, the Spot Average Daily Volume (ADV) reached $54.9 billion in May, marking a 14.4% increase compared to $48.0 billion during the same month last year. This growth highlights an active expansion in spot forex trading, driven by heightened investor interest and increased market volatility.
At the same time, the Cboe Swap Execution Facility (SEF) saw exceptional growth, with its ADV rising to more than $4.8 billion—a remarkable 54.5% jump from May 2025’s $3.1 billion. The SEF also recorded a single-day trading high of $7.2 billion on May 5, underscoring peak activity and the growing reliance on electronic platforms for fixed income and forex derivative trades.
Within the broader Cboe FX ecosystem, the Electronic Communication Network (ECN) Firm ADV hit $20.1 billion, accounting for over half (51.4%) of total spot ECN volume. This represents a 14.5% increase from the previous year’s $17.5 billion, reflecting steady demand for firm liquidity in spot currency markets. Furthermore, ECN Metals ADV grew by 26.5%, reaching $2.9 billion and comprising 7.7% of the total spot ECN volume.
These upward trends illustrate a broader shift toward electronic trading and evolving market structures that emphasize transparency and operational efficiency. Cboe FX’s comprehensive data includes transactions executed through its New York and London matching engines, providing a global perspective on forex activity.
Market analysts point out that volume comparisons across different platforms have been adjusted to account for variations in counting methods and local holiday effects on trading days. The data set also captures both firm and non-firm quotes available on Cboe FX platforms, highlighting a diverse range of liquidity providers and trading strategies.
Overall, the May 2026 figures underscore sustained growth momentum within the forex market, propelled by expanding electronic trading volumes and increasing participation from institutional investors and global traders alike.
