USD/CAD Rises as Canadian Inflation Pressures Mount Amid Global Uncertainty

by Anna

The USD/CAD exchange rate has surged to new highs, propelled by rising inflation in Canada and persistent geopolitical tensions affecting global commodity markets. Recent data indicates that Canada’s Producer Price Index (PPI) reached its highest level since June 2022, reflecting increased costs for producers that may soon be passed on to consumers. This inflationary pressure has weakened the Canadian dollar, while the US dollar benefits from expectations that the Federal Reserve will continue its stringent monetary policy stance.

According to Statistics Canada, the year-over-year PPI jumped from 11.1% in April to 13.6% in May. This sharp increase was driven mainly by rising prices in raw materials such as chemical products, energy, petroleum, and non-ferrous metals. Supply chain disruptions, particularly in the Middle East, have intensified price pressures across several sectors, pushing commodity prices higher. Although the monthly PPI rose by 1.2%, slightly under analyst projections, the overall trend signals ongoing inflation challenges.

Following this data release, the USD/CAD rate climbed approximately 0.25%, reaching near 1.4128. Technical indicators reveal strong short-term bullish momentum with prices trading above significant long-term moving averages. Resistance is currently identified around 1.4130, with potential for further gains toward 1.4500 if this threshold is broken. Support levels at 1.3930 and 1.3820 could provide buffers against declines; however, momentum oscillators like MACD and RSI warn of overbought conditions that may temper advances.

The currency pair recently touched a yearly high close to 1.4240, extending a rally that began in early May and has pushed USD/CAD up by nearly 5%. Analysts attribute this upward movement primarily to widening yield differentials between US and Canadian government bonds, although these spreads have stabilized somewhat in recent days. Experts at Scotiabank caution that the rally might be overextended, noting that the daily RSI has surpassed 88—an extreme level not seen in over two decades. While maintaining a neutral-to-bullish outlook on USD/CAD, they emphasize the need for caution as any correction could be swift.

The Canadian dollar’s recent weakness is also linked to global geopolitical risks, including disruptions in energy supply chains and heightened concerns related to Iran. These factors add pressure on commodity-dependent currencies like the CAD. Despite technical signals suggesting overbought conditions, underlying fundamentals and ongoing market uncertainties continue to support bullish sentiment.

In summary, the USD/CAD exchange rate is advancing amid rising inflation within Canada and international supply chain issues impacting commodity prices worldwide. While technical indicators advise prudence due to stretched momentum, investors remain alert to key resistance points for signs of further gains or possible pullbacks. The outlook stays cautiously optimistic but remains highly sensitive to new economic data releases and geopolitical developments.
