South Korea Expands Forex Trading Hours to 24/7 for Greater Market Liquidity

by Anna

South Korea has taken a major step forward in its foreign exchange market by introducing round-the-clock trading. The Ministry of Economy and Finance announced that starting Monday at 6 a.m., the forex market will operate continuously, replacing the former schedule that restricted won-dollar trading to 17 hours daily, from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. the next day.

This new 24-hour trading system opens opportunities for both domestic and international investors to engage in forex transactions without time limitations. Deputy Prime Minister Koo Yun-cheol personally visited Hana Bank’s dealing room in Seoul to observe the market’s transition and met with Hana Financial Group Chairman Ham Young-joo. Hana Bank, a dominant player in South Korea’s forex market by volume, is expected to be a key driver in supporting this extended trading framework.

Koo highlighted that this initiative underscores confidence in South Korea’s robust economic fundamentals. He pointed to the nation’s impressive current account surplus as a sign of financial strength. According to Bank of Korea data, South Korea’s current account surplus exceeded $100 billion during the first four months of the year, with March alone contributing nearly $38 billion. Such solid economic performance provides a strong foundation for expanding forex trading hours.

Chairman Ham expressed positive expectations for nonstop forex trading, believing it will attract more global investment into won-denominated assets like government bonds and stocks. He emphasized Hana Financial Group’s dedication to utilizing its vast international network and sales expertise to help modernize and expand South Korea’s foreign exchange market.

By aligning with major global financial centers where continuous currency trading is standard, South Korea aims to enhance market liquidity and make its capital markets more attractive. Eliminating trading hour restrictions is designed to create a more dynamic environment capable of responding swiftly to worldwide economic changes.

Additionally, the extended hours provide greater convenience for investors across different time zones, likely encouraging increased trading volumes and more active participation in the market. This strategic reform reflects South Korea’s commitment to deeper integration within global financial systems while reinforcing its economic stability and growth prospects.

In summary, South Korea’s adoption of full-day forex trading represents a significant milestone that is expected to elevate its status as a competitive force in international finance, fostering greater liquidity, efficiency, and investor confidence.
