The Fayette County Board of Education convened for its regular meeting on May 19 in the school district’s boardroom at the Fayette County Courthouse Annex. All board members were present for the session. The meeting began with a prayer led by board member Julie Stough, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Portia Stowe. Before official business commenced, Deputy Superintendent Mary Raines honored the valedictorians and salutatorians from the county’s three high schools for their academic achievements. Valedictorians recognized included Zoe Whitson from Hubbertville, Chris Huynh from Fayette, and Lillian Roberts from Berry. Salutatorians Skylar Hubbert, Bailey Unger, and Anna Raley Palmer also addressed the board to share their college and degree plans.
Taylor Carter from the Alabama Examiners of Public Accounts presented the fiscal year 2025 audit results for the Fayette County School System. The audit confirmed that the financial statements fairly represented the district’s financial position as of September 30, 2025, including federal awards expenditures. Superintendent Jim Burkhalter and board members received a positive report indicating sound financial management.
The board unanimously approved the meeting agenda and minutes from the April 14 meeting. Board President Brenda Webb introduced a comprehensive Personnel Action Report which included leaves of absence, resignations, retirements, non-renewals, new hires, transfers, and various contracts related to summer programs and coaching assignments. A notable discussion arose over a long-term substitute physical education position at Berry Elementary School. Board member Portia Stowe questioned the urgency of filling this role when it was posted as a full-time teaching position rather than a substitute role. After debate about certification timelines and coaching responsibilities tied to the job, Jordan Roberts was approved for the position with a 5-1 vote.
The Consent Agenda covered multiple school district purchases and contracts such as new social studies textbooks across all grade levels, cafeteria table replacements funded through Child Nutrition Program monies, fire alarm system repairs at several schools, and facility upgrades including HVAC replacements and bathroom remodels. The board also authorized bids for fuel supplies and approved auctions for older vehicles no longer in use.
Financial statements for March were reviewed and approved unanimously, showing total expenses nearing $2.8 million. Additionally, updates to the district’s strategic plan covering 2025 to 2030 were accepted as presented by Deputy Superintendent Raines.
Superintendent Burkhalter thanked staff, students, parents, and community members for their efforts during the school year. He also congratulated Hubbertville High School’s baseball team on winning their first Class 1A state championship on May 21 after a hard-fought series.
Looking ahead, Fayette County’s next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for June 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the central office boardroom in the courthouse annex building.
