US Dollar Gains Momentum Amid Middle East Conflict and Japanese Market Moves

by Anna

The US dollar has surged in value amid growing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the possibility of renewed currency intervention by Japan. Heightened conflict between the US and Iran has unsettled global markets, driving investors toward the greenback as a safe haven in uncertain times.

Recent US military actions targeting an Iranian tanker, followed by Iran’s retaliatory strikes on neighboring countries, have significantly reduced hopes for a quick resolution. Market confidence in a peace agreement by the end of June has plummeted to just 27%, while the chance of reopening the critical Strait of Hormuz now stands at 22%, sharply down from earlier May estimates of 75% and 60%. These shifts have injected notable volatility into forex trading worldwide.

Meanwhile, the European Central Bank is expected to raise its deposit rate from 2% to 2.25% to combat inflationary pressures. Despite this move, the euro has weakened against the dollar, as geopolitical risks continue to overshadow economic fundamentals. The dollar’s strength is also apparent against the Japanese yen, with the USD/JPY exchange rate nearing the psychologically significant level of 160.

Japan has been closely monitoring its currency’s rapid depreciation against the dollar and may soon restart intervention efforts to stabilize exchange rates. Earlier this year, interventions helped lower USD/JPY from above 160 to around 155 but did not reverse the overall upward trend of the dollar. Attention now turns to the upcoming Bank of Japan meeting, where Governor Kazuo Ueda’s remarks will be closely watched. Markets currently assign an 83% probability that Japan will raise its overnight rate in June, and any indication of a tighter monetary stance could prompt further shifts in forex markets.

In parallel, futures markets have adjusted their outlook on US Federal Reserve policy. The probability of a rate hike in 2026 has risen to 56%, with a 15% chance of two or more increases. These expectations reflect ongoing concerns about persistent inflation fueled by rising energy costs and extended conflict in the Middle East.

The Canadian dollar has also weakened recently amid renewed worries over tariffs and trade disputes, adding another layer of complexity to global currency movements. Overall, forex markets remain highly sensitive to geopolitical developments and central bank decisions, highlighting the importance for traders and analysts to monitor these evolving factors closely.
